This 5-day upskill course is designed for gas engineers seeking to broaden their expertise and offer a wider range of services to their clients. Participants will gain both theoretical understanding and hands-on experience in three key areas:
- WRAS Water Regulations
Learn the essential legal requirements for working with water systems, ensuring compliance and safe practices. - Unvented Hot Water Systems and Safety (HWSS)
Develop the skills needed to install, maintain, and ensure the safety of unvented hot water systems in various settings. - Installation and Maintenance of Air Source Heat Pumps
Master the principles of air source heat pump technology, including system setup and efficient ongoing maintenance.
By completing this programme, gas engineers will be equipped with the knowledge and qualifications required to expand their service offerings, boost client satisfaction, and stay competitive in today’s rapidly evolving marketplace.
Who is this programme for?
This 5-day upskill course is designed for currently qualified gas engineers actively working in the industry who want to expand their range of services. To enrol, participants must have recent experience and hold the 18th Edition and Initial Testing & Verification qualifications. This ensures a solid foundation for further developing expertise in WRAS Water Regulations, Unvented Hot Water Systems and Safety (HWSS), and the Installation and Maintenance of Air Source Heat Pumps.

Learners will gain the following industry-recognised qualifications & understanding:
Pre-requisites
Candidates must be active in the gas industry, and have the following qualifications & experience:
- Candidates must be experienced in the installation of cold and hot water systems. They must also hold one DCLG-recognised competency in a conventional fuel (I. e. gas, oil or solid fuel).
- For those in the plumbing field, an NVQ level 2 or equivalent plumbing qualification or experience.
- Candidates undertaking the course should also be conversant with the new Part G document, which can be downloaded from the following link: Part G Building Document 2010
- N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Plumbing or equivalent earlier certification that provides evidence of competence;
or
- N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Heating and Ventilating (Domestic Installation) or equivalent earlier certification that provides evidence of competence;
or
- N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Heating and Ventilating (Industrial and Commercial Installation) or equivalent earlier certification that provides evidence of competence;
or
- N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Oil-Fired Technical Services or equivalent earlier certification that provides evidence of competence;
or
- N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Gas Installation and Maintenance or equivalent earlier certification that provides evidence of competence;
or
- Heating installers with experience installing wet central heating systems, evidenced either by Gas Safe (CENWAT), OFTEC (OFT10-105E or OFT15-108W), MCS (Heat Pump or Solar Thermal Hot Water) or HETAS (H004) registration. The experience in these sectors will normally be 3 years, although where the initial assessment confirms the learner has the necessary skills, knowledge and experience, which can be evidenced via RPL assessment, this duration may be reduced.
Applicants must be 16 or over.
Course structure and Assesment method
Course Length
Candidates are expected to attend our Kirkintilloch Centre for Theory and Practical Learning for five days between 9 am and 5 pm.
Assessment Method
The 5-Day Course covers theoretical and practical skills across all of the included subjects.
- Written Tests: Demonstrate knowledge of key concepts and safety procedures.
- Practical Assessments
A strong grasp of course material and hands-on practice is essential for success in both areas of the exam.
